All about the Phnom Penh to Siem Reap Cycling Tour.

Born out of the Khmer Empire, which dominated much of the region 1000 years ago, the Kingdom of Cambodia is one of the most exciting of South-East Asian destinations. This leisurely cycle tour is simply the best way to explore the highlights of a country whose chief means of transport often seems to be the bike. Starting out in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, we are provided with our bikes and set off to explore on backroads and village trails amongst the breathtaking temples of Angkor Wat.

We also seek out the less well-known routes and paddle through Khmer local villages, fishing communities, silversmith and ceramic pottery villages which are hidden in the heart of Cambodia countryside. This leisurely cycle tour is simply the best way to explore the highlights of a country and explore a French colonial architecture city and learn the story of Felix Louis Bardez. He was beaten to death by the villagers of Kraing Laev on 18th April 1925, where he had been attempting to collect delinquent taxes. Bardez was an experienced administrator, with over ten years of service in the Protectorate. He was forty-two years old. Two Cambodians who had accompanied him to the village, a militiaman and an interpreter, were killed at the same time. Finally, we take a boat trip from Battambang to Siem Reap where you’ll encounter experiences with the floating villages, farmland and learn more about the insight of local culture through the Tonle Sap Lake. A leisurely mountain biking holiday, offering the chance to experience the very best of Cambodia.

  1. Day 1 Silk Island & Oudong Mount (Old capital city of Cambodia)

We provided hotel pick up that starts from 7:30am then drove to our bike shop located on the Mekong Island which takes around 1 hour including crossing the river by ferry and upon the group size. Upon the arrival, we choose the bike to fit with our size, wear a helmet and our guide will have a brief about the trip included on how to use our bicycle, riding side and test a ride a little bit before we start. We begin our mountain biking through the silk island where we will explore different crops of farmland such as banana, mango plantation, numerous vegetable farms, local villages and learn about the silk weaving process when we visit their weaving community. Then, we took a next ride to see the bean curd factory and learn how they make it from the soybean. Continuously, we take another ferry headed to Tonle Sap River where you’ll encounter experience with the Khmer community, muslim community, paddy rice fields, lotus farms, fishing community, and silversmith community before having lunch at Oudong mount. Oudong was a former royal capital of Cambodia from the 17th to the 19th centuries. A refreshing and stunning view from the top of Oudong mount is the ideal way to end our first day, before we transfer to our overnight stay at Kampong Chhnang town.

    • Accommodation: Garden Guesthouse, Kampong Chhnang

  2. Day 2 Khmer ceramic pottery villages and transfer to Battambang

We take our bike ride through the city of Kampong Chhnang and visit some French colonial architecture buildings including one of the French colonial houses, Felix Louis Bardez. Continuously, we cycled to the Khmer ceramic pottery villages where they made a lot of products for household use like pots, stove, Earthenware etc from the clay. Interestingly, we try that handmade of ceramic pottery products, explore that peaceful village which is covered by paddy rice fields, pamp trees with a mountain view of Neang Kang Rei mount that most of people in Kampong Chhnang known that legend and recognized her body turned into the mountain which lies across the river in Kampong Chhnang and still resembles the body of a prone woman. Then we cycle through the local village and have a short transfer to the hidden waterfall which is located on the foothill on cardamom mountain range. After relaxing and enjoying Khmer food there, we have a few hours to transfer to Battambang which is a classically quaint provincial capital – old-world architecture.

    • Cycling Distance: 35 km (22 miles)
    • Accommodation: Classy Hotel & Spa, Battambang
    • Meals: BLD
  3. Day 3 Highlights of Battambang (French colonial architecture city)

After breakfast, we get a sightseeing tour through the Battambang town which is a classically quaint provincial capital – old-world architecture and even older pagodas set picturesquely along a river, and even though the city is one of the country’s largest, it is still lightly touristic. In town, charming colonial-era buildings line narrow lanes, including the ‘walking district’ near the market where contemporary art galleries, local and foreign cafes, shops and bars inhabit the old shop houses. Then we continued to visit the oldest Khmer traditional house, Ek Phnom Temple and its countryside through the Sangke river.  We went back for lunch in the town and rested at the hotel for a few hours before we continued to get a bamboo train, visit Phnom Banan temple and sunset at Sampov mountain where the bat will fly out from the cave. Phnom Banan is a mountaintop, mid-11th century Angkorian-era ruin consisting of five prasats (towers) arranged in the quincunx (five-pointed) form reminiscent of Angkor Wat.
